The Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR)Validation Site

Data Handling and Validation Tools

Meeting & Workshop

There are a number of tools to help validation data providers. There are summarised in the table below, and include:

Validation Data The NILU Database The data coming from the various validation campaigns will be held within a central storage facility established at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) in Norway. NILU will provide access to correlative measurements from sensors on-board satellites, aircraft, balloons and ships as well as from ground-based instruments and under-water devices and numerical models, such as that of the ECMWF. Users can connect to the database to add or retrieve data according to their requirements. All PI's should have their own login name and password, and should upload data in a specified HDF format as soon as it is available after validation campaigns.
Envisat Data ESA User Services Facility

Post commissioning, the ESA User Services Facility can be used to search and order ENVISAT data products. Users must register to receive a username and password, and can then use the facility online.

EnviView EnviView is a platform independent software tool that is capable of reading all ENVISAT products. It includes a basic 'quick-look' visualisation capability and the facility to extract data, or subsets of data for post-processing. Also included is an option to convert the data from PDS to HDF 4.1 r2 format, which can then be read into other software packages, and is useful for comparison with data held in the NILU database. EnviView is available on CDROM from ESA or can be downloaded from the Envisat webpages.

Mission planning helpdesk

Any problems with ENVISAT data should be directed to the mission planning helpdesk. This can be reached at maps@jw.estec.esa.nl
CFI software libraries The mission CFI software is a collection of software functions performing accurate computations of mission related parameters for ENVISAT. These functions are delivered in the form of software libraries gathering the functions that share similar functionality. To retrieve them, a registration procedure is necessary.
ESOV The Earth Map and Swath Visualisation tool (ESOV) is a collection of software functions that perform accurate computations of mission related parameters. The use of the software will assist in planning data acquisition designed to coincide with the overpasses of ENVISAT and other sensors. The updated orbit for ESOV distributed at launch can be downloaded here
Web Based TIME utilities Two time conversion calculators are available - a basic calculator for any user and an advanced calculator for users knowledgeable about the ENVISAT ground segment. The basic calculator allows the user to convert between various time formats officially used in the ENVISAT ground segment e.g. in product or auxiliary files. The advanced calculator allows the same conversion with an additions conversion to/from on-board time.
