Second Workshop on the
 Atmospheric Chemistry Validation of ENVISAT
(ACVE-2)

Frascati, Italy

3 – 7 May, 2004

Organised by the European Space Agency (ESA)

Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes

The Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes of the European Space Agency organised the second workshop on the Atmospheric Chemistry Validation of ENVISAT. The workshop was held from May 3rd to May 7th, 2004, at ESA’s European Space Research Institute (ESRIN) in Frascati, Italy.

Purpose

Following the recommendations given at the Envisat Validation Workshop and responding to the need for the subgroups of the ACVT to have a meeting to discuss the results of the correlative data acquisitions and analysis and to derive the current status of the operational atmospheric chemistry products including refining the error bars, the (second) workshop on Atmospheric Chemistry Validation of Envisat (ACVE-2) has been held in May 2004. A third ACVE workshop is expected to take place in 2005. These meetings are primarily intended for the participants of the ENVISAT Atmospheric Chemistry Validation Programme.

Program Structure

The workshop was organised around plenary sessions with invited presentations and a poster session. The short (10-15 minutes) oral presentations by the instrument species-coordinators were scheduled on Monday afternoon, Tuesday, Wednesday morning and Thursday to discuss on instrument by instrument and species by species basis the validation results, to reassess the quality of the data products and to refine the error bars for the products.

It was mandatory that all the validation results presented were based on the reprocessed Cal/Val dataset released to the PI’s in early 2004.

The program concluded with a summary of the results on Friday morning. A poster session was held on Wednesday afternoon intended for the individual presentations of the validation results of all the participants of the ENVISAT Atmospheric Chemistry Validation Programme.

Validation Species

The geophysical parameters indicated in black in the table below and reprocessed with the processor version given, were expected to be of sufficient quality to be validated by the validation teams and to be assessed during the workshop. For the species indicated in red not enough reprocessed data was available or the operational algorithms for the retrieval were not mature enough for validation, although preliminary results of a number of these species have been presented. For GOMOS only the dark limb measurements were of sufficient quality at the time of the workshop.

Species-coordinators

The species-coordinators were requested to present, within the allocated time, validation results for operational (NRT and OL) products, provided that the status of these products allowed meaningful comparisons. For products where the status of the operational products did not allow the validation to start, the coordinators were requested to present some results of non-operational product validation to reflect the status of the development process. The species-coordinators have contacted the different validation teams for their inputs. The validation teams were requested to disseminate their results to the respective species-coordinator.
