The Envisat Satellite Service Module
The service module (SM) is based on the concept
and design of the SPOT Mk II service module with a number of important new developments,
particularly in the area of mechanical design.
The Service Module
The service module combines a newly designed
thermal control and solar array with SPOT 4 recurrent or partly modified hardware for the
electronic equipment (attitude and orbit control, power distribution, and storage and
data-handling systems) and for the propulsion subsystem. The attitude control system uses
a star tracker-based reference system. The solar array is made up of 14 panels (the
multimission design can have up to 16), measures 14 m × 5 m, and provides 6.5 kW of power
at end-of-life.
