Brazil Deforestation
This artificially coloured image
shows the Teles Pires river in Brazil (Mato Grosso State) and rain forests that have
partly been cut down. A regular pattern of deforestation is clearly seen in rectangular
patches of destroyed forest extending over areas as large as 20 kilometres.

Most of the time rainforests are covered by
clouds. The radar instruments ASAR image through these, sending back high-resolution
images every time the region is scanned. This is a key capability because in the tropics
things are prone to rapid change. ERS-1 provides regular and frequent imagery, making
possible continuous long-term observation of deforestation, of the resulting clearcut
areas, and/or possible erosion. In the tropical belt countries, ESA supplies ERS-1 images
to the EC (
TREES
project), allowing them to establish and maintain a forest inventory.
